Over the last couple of months, I’ve been thinking more and more about the concept of fear, and why it can have such a powerful hold over us. In essence there are 4 basic versions of emotions that we as humans feel; joy, anger, fear and love. All other emotions are derivatives or combinations of these four.

Joy and anger are pretty obvious, and as humans we’re very much in touch with when we’re feeling these emotions. However love and fear, are more complex. Love is such a complex emotion that I’m not even going to get into it right now, but fear is also a very powerful emotion that can wreck tremendous havoc on our lives if we let it.

What’s driving your actions? Courage? Or Fear?

Do you ever stop and wonder why you do certain things? Or don’t do certain things? The thing about fear, is that it is so cunningly disguised within us that we don’t even recognize it most of the time. We make up stories for why we can’t do certain things, or why we shouldn’t try certain things, or excuses for why we haven’t done certain things…. We create this impression of what we think we can expect from our lives, and unfortunately more often than not we settle for a tiny fraction of our potential.

These stories have often become so embedded into our subconscious as beliefs, that we no longer question them. “I can’t earn that much money because I’m not qualified enough”. “I’d be able to start the business I’ve always wanted to start if I didn’t have so many other commitments”. “It’s easy for that person because they’ve got more money, more time, they’re better looking, they’re taller, shorter, the youngest child, the oldest child, the middle child”…. The list goes on.

By not accepting responsibility, we become powerless to some external influence that we’ve made up. The 3rd law of Karma is the Law of Humility, and it states:

“One must accept something in order to change it”.

If we cannot accept that the story we tell ourselves isn’t real, and if we cannot accept that we’re hiding from fear, then we cannot change our lives.

The SECOND we accept responsibility, we can start taking control of the situation, and taking actions towards changing the outcome.

How many things would you attempt today if you did not feel fear? If you were guaranteed success with no risk whatsoever, what would you go out and accomplish right now?

Your perfect dream life is right in front of you, so what’s the biggest story that you’re telling yourself as to why you can’t get it? I guarantee there’s a story, and I guarantee that story has been created to cover up a fear that we have. That could be fear of failure, fear of loss, fear of criticism, a whole number of things.

Going after our dreams is scary, and it takes courage! But the only way to grow and move forwards, is to face the fear and overcome it. Our lives are dictated by NOTHING more than what goes on within our own heads. Nothing at all. There is nothing external to us that cannot be overcome by changing the thought processes, beliefs, and perceptions within our own heads.

Want proof? Have a look at this 4 minute video from Nick Vujicic, the man with no arms and no legs:

So what’s your excuse? What’s your story? Maybe it’s time to confront that story and see it for what it really is, because that story is the only thing standing between where you are now, and the life of your dreams. The journey won’t be easy, and there’ll be many challenges, but if we keep believing our made up stories we’ll never take the first step.

A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step, so take the first step today.
